Pawel Grunert

Sometimes the material needed to create a wonderful piece of art is in your own backyard. With string, paper straw or even with soda bottles, some of the great’s pieces of art have been formed. That’s the way Pawel Grunert creates his work. Grunert has composed many differ forms of art from chairs, tables, doors, stairs, to other objects. Studied at the Faculty of Interior Architecture in Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, Grunert, now a furniture designer, has brought forth many different styles to the art world. Most of his exhibitions were displayed around his home country Poland.

He has received many awards and Publication for his work including the” All-Polish Competition 'CHAIR`94' with entry: WICKER THRONE 'FOR THE WIND'; Third Prize” in 1995, and in 1996 Grunert received the “International Furniture Design Fair Asahikawa'95, Japan, with entry: THRONE 'HAIR OF EARTH'; finalist. “And finally received the Elle (Polish edition); Elle Deco International Design Awards in 2002. Grunert was published in the International Design Yearbook 2000, Ardi, Interni, Domus, Dom & Wnętrze, Stylowy Dom, Galeria, Dobre Wnętrze, Meble Plus, Architektura, Art & Business.

The style Grunert uses changes with each spulture he creates. Many forms of his art come from different materials such as straw, stainless steel, wood texture, plastic, and silicon.

The three examples that I found to be most remarkable are his Unique Mineral Bottle chair made of stainless steel, PET bottles. The Nest Chair made of steel wool and the White Wardrobe.

The bottle chair is designed in an interesting way as it stands at a curb slant. The hair main function is for relaxation, if bottles can hold the weight a human body. The balance of the collective bottles gravitates the movement of the chair. The textures of the bottles make for an easy combination of lines that greats a volume of patterns with mass. Most of Grunert conceptual art is submissive to the function of the piece. The shapes tell a story of its own with relation to how it functions.  The texture is also important because most the material used mostly are organic, wood, straw, and works to make a political statement on how objects used in the home are made with unsteady materials that doesn’t last. With plastic and steel wool, the artist wants to go back to resources with a stronger foundation. The form is also attention-grabbing as seen from the White wardrobe piece that Grunert understands the utilization of lines and space and the purpose of movement. The selves, made of wood, do not seem to follow on one singular pattern vertically or horizontally. With little space between some selves, this piece would be more as an art sculpture then a household shelf. In fact on the sides of the lines seems to be trying to expand past the formed shape making the sculpture seem like it’s unfinished and can be connected to something else. It seems that Grunert is branching out the stereotypes of modern shape in furniture to a more naturalistic design common to how nature is undefined and underspecification.
